Baking and cooking my way through the cold Alaska winters keeps me from getting cabin fever. With the help of my husband and our three dogs, we manage to maintain our sanity through adventures in our kitchen and our hometown, Fairbanks.

Kentucky Kiss
So, no one has ever accused me of being graceful or even coordinated. But last Sunday I was coordination at it's finest...um, yea.
I was up and moving early, I had three closets cleaned out of dishes and was starting on the fourth, those new shelves Dave put in were getting loaded up. I had 4 platters in my hands and I stepped down into the dish room, rolled my ankle (I even heard it pop), landed on the concrete floor and didn't hit my head or break a dish (I could only be proud of that fact hours later when the Dr. asked how the dishes faired). I was down for the count and couldn't get up. I yelled for Dave (who was still in bed, it was only 8:30 a.m.) and he came running down the stairs (what a way to wake up). A trip to the emergency room, a couple of x-rays, and 4 hours later, I was propped in my chair watching football with an air brace. No break, thank goodness, but 6 weeks for total recovery. The Dr. did say I could walk on it as it allowed (I'm posting that so Dave doesn't forget, he wants me to use the crutches everywhere).
So, my plan for getting the duplex ready for the kids has slowed down a bit. Dave is being a really good sport and doing all my chores, my to-do list, his to-do list and running to get me a drink and my Motrin. I'm going to work and coming home a little grumpy because by the end of the day my foot hurts and I've been cheerful for as long as I can stand.
This is what is helping me get through the week. Usually, drink of the week is ONE drink for the week, usually on Thursday or Friday. But this week, it is a daily occurrence. Don't judge, Dave needs the break, it helps me sleep, and you need something to wash all that Motrin down with. Next week, I'll skip the Drink of the Week all together and drink something like a parsley smoothie to clean my liver.
Kentucky Kiss
1 shot bourbon
chilled sparkling apple cider
cherry for garnish (I didn't have any, and I wasn't going to the store. They taste good without, anyway.)
Pour bourbon into a champagne glass. Fill the glass the rest of the way with apple cider, garnish with a cherry. Repeat as needed.

Well done on not breaking any of the dishes!! They can always re-build your ankle, but you and I both know from experience when a dish is gone...it's gone. I hope you are feeling better this weekend.
ReplyDeleteThanks Suzanne, I'm feeling better with every drink! Feel very sorry for Dave.
